He then joined the U.S. Naval Reserve, in which he ultimately rose to the rank of captain before retiring after twenty five years of service. His active duty time included service aboard the USS Providence (CLG-6) as a line officer which included a combat deployment to Vietnam in 1972. During his reserve career, he served as a both a line officer and as a Judge Advocate General (JAG) officer. Attorney Wegener is board certified in family law by the Louisiana Board of Legal Specialization and is nationally recognized as a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.
